Membership
EckO welcomes new members. Anyone with an interest in orienteering is welcome to the club. If you are a newcomer to the sport, there are experienced people in the club who can help to introduce you to the sport. People with orienteering experience are also very welcome.
There is no membership fee to join the club, but if you plan to orienteer regularly you should join the British Orienteering Federation and the Scottish Orienteering Association. These bodies are responsible for the management and development of the sport and need the financial support of participants. Most funding (government & public) is based on the sports membership numbers and participation, so it’s important that you are officially recorded as an orienteer.
It’s Free!
Your first years membership is free to both bodies if you only plan to orienteer in Scotland, you would be classed as a “Local Member of British Orienteering”.
The benefits of being a Local Member are:
- Insurance cover (liability to 3rd parties) at events registered with British Orienteering
- Bi-Annual Newsletter from British Orienteering & Bi-Monthly Scottish Orienteering magazine
- Eligibility to compete in the JK, national, regional and local events
- Discounted entry (£2) to most events in Scotland
- Vote at the British Orienteering AGM & Scottish Orienteering AGM
- Discounts from national companies through the member discounts scheme (see below)
- Access to a national badge and ranking scheme
The cost after your free year is currently £3 junior, £16.75 adult or £27.50 family
Download the Membership Form fill it in and return it. This is the only way to get it free, as the online entry form will charge for membership of Scottish Orienteering, who are also free for your first year but the system can’t cope with that.
If you plan to orienteer outside Scotland you should consider becoming a “National Member of British Orienteering”.
The extra benefits of being a National Member are:
- Quarterly issue of the British Orienteering magazine, Focus, which includes the junior magazine Ozone
- Discounted entry to the JK, national, regional and local events in all regions and significant saving (£2 per day) when entering a multi-day holiday event outside of Scotland, such as the Welsh or Lakes 5-day
- Opportunity to qualify to represent your country at international competitions
The cost for this is currently £7.50 junior, £29.75 adult or £43 family per year.
