Briony reports on Lagganlia tour
From my week at Lagganlia I have learnt lots. Maybe not lots of new skills or tools, as they were called, but I’ve learnt to use them more and in a better way to my advantage. I have gained confidence in planning and executing legs as well.
The first three days we concentrated on compass, pacing, attack points, catching and collecting features and contours. The first two days were at local areas but the third, Tuesday, was at Culbin.
Wednesday afternoon we had a rest but the morning was spent doing a sprint qualifier and final. I was surprised to find myself second in the girls’ qualifier but didn’t do so well in the final which was held at Lagganlia, I don’t like buildings, you can’t go through them!
In the evenings we would be briefed for the following day, maybe do an exercise such as circle these contour features and sometimes talk to our coaches about the day. We were all in groups of four; two girls and two boys with two coaches, my coaches were Don McKerrow and Anne Edwards.
Thursday was more contour work and Friday being the last day we had a classic race. I was pleased with how I did and that I used lots of my reinforced skills however I’m annoyed about number one, it took 18.55. If it hadn’t been for it I would have done heaps better. As it is I was tenth out of twelve.
Throughout the week we did various fun relays in different teams as part of training but also to get to know the people. I arrived only knowing one person, Evelyn Mason, now I know twenty two more fourteen year olds and thirteen coaches/ top orienteers.
At Lagganlia I had great fun, learnt loads and met lots of new friends. Thank you everyone for all your support in getting me there. It was a wonderful opportunity and I’m glad I could make use of it.
P.S. Another thing I learnt was to wash printed o-tops inside out.
P.P.S. This is just for Alan. We were shown a bit about Winsplits that you buy, and all the different things you can do on it. It was quite interesting.
