British Schools Orienteering Championships, 2009

These were held near Newcastle at Druridge Country Park on the 22nd November. It was a great weekend with training on the Saturday afternoon, a social on the Saturday evening and then the competition itself on the Sunday. Like all orienteering events it was really well organised with a games tent for the children while they were waiting and the opportunity to speak to some of the British team who were answering questions and signing autographs.
I was amazed at the distances some schools had come as there were children from Newquay as well as Inverness! It was a great result for Callum winning the silver and a big surprise to win third in the small Primary Schools section. We are certainly planning to go again next year and hope this time we may have some more juniors to join us!
I went with Ellis on a white course at the training on Saturday afternoon. After we had our run we went round the Woodhorn Colliery Museum and for a ride on a train which was where the training was. After that we went to the Premier Inn where we were staying and then we got ready for the Pasta Party. There were lots of people at the Pasta Party and we got Pasta and orange juice to drink. On Sunday I went out on a white course by myself and I was very nervous before I went out but I was pleased when I came in sixth place and Taynuilt Primary school came in third and I got a medal.

At the training event I did a Yellow and an Orange course once I had worked out which controls on the map belonged to my courses. The courses seemed very easy which made me feel I might be in with a chance for a medal the next day if the courses were the same. The Pasta Party was great fun but the music was very loud and I could have eaten much more pasta than the small tub I got and we had to go for chips afterwards. On Sunday I was the last person to run on my course so I knew what time I had to beat if I wanted to do well. On the course some of the controls were very easy but the wind was very strong and we had to run against it down the beach. It was a long way between number one and two and I looked for the control abit to soon which cost me some time but I was very pleased to come in second and to get a third for the school.
