EckO Team achieves 5th place in the Scottish Compass Sport Cup

EckO came a creditable 5th place in the Annual club competition in Scotland otherwise known as the Compass Sport Cup last Sunday 29th March 2009. The event held at Mugdock Country Park near Milngavie, Glasgow was one of the South of Scotland League events and organised by Clydeside Orienteers. This was the first time EckO were able to field a full team for the event and realised the clubs growing potential across all age ranges and abilities.
Everyone ran their normal courses individually but accrued points according to their time relative to the winning time for their course. Points were amalgamated and EckO’s combined score beat 5 other long established Scottish Orienteering clubs to come 5th place overall. This represents a milestone in the club’s history making it arguably a force to be rEckOned with in Scottish Orienteering. Full results of the event.
Our best performances were achieved by Briony Kincaid who came 3rd in the Orange course (2.6km) beating a number of 12 – 14 year old boys and girls in the process (she later went out for a non-competitive run on the Veteran Green course and would have been 2nd out of 12 if official). Andy Dale came 4th in the Brown course (9.3 Km) and gave the M21s a run for their money. Some Heroic performances were also achieved by Finlay Walton and Bruce Griffiths coming 7th and 10th respectively in the Light Green (3.7km) course, Kate Hunter (14th) and Carol Burnapp (19th) in the Womens Blue course and Leigh Murray (23rd) on the Green Women course all punching above their weight on length and technical challenge. This was relatively new experience for the boys who (as far as I’m aware) have not ventured out of home territory until now.
Solid performances from Alan, Dave, Paul, Ross, Lynne and Gill completed the team’s effort. Julie, Roanne and Callum also had enjoyable runs. Pity the white course did not count towards the team scores as Roanne’s 1st place and Callum’s 5th place would have surely punted EckO to a higher overall position.
Never mind. There is a lot of promise for future national team and individual events amongst these results…and of course, an incentive for our other regular local event participants to come along to events outside the EckO area and get a taste of what else Scottish Orienteering can offer them.
