SOLs – All year
This stands for Scottish Orienteering League (SOL). There are 7 of these events held all over Scotland throughout the year and you will see them detailed on the main EckO site as SOL 1, SOL 2 etc.
You have to be a BOF (British Orienteering Federation) member and enter 4 of these events in the correct age class to get a certificate. When you have completed your course you are given points for your time and the position you came on the course ie 1st, 16th, 28th etc, these are then added into the league table. You can see last years league table on the SOA (Scottish Orienteering Association) website.
The first SOL is on Sunday 6th March at Dalrulzion, near Blairgowrie.
Scottish Six Days - 31st July - 5th August
Many of you may have heard of the Scottish Six Days. This event attracts people from all over the world and as its name suggests, it is 6 days of orienteering. You need to compete in any 4 days out of the 6 to get an overall result. Again you enter in your age class through Fabian4 which is the entries website. There will be orienteering on the Sun, Mon and Tue. Wed is a rest day and then there is orienteering again on the Thur, Fri and Sat with prize giving on the Sat.
Please note we will be looking for juniors to help in the organising side during the week.
Inter-Schools Oban, Lorn and Isles Competition - 6th May
This is on Friday 6th May for P4-7s. If you would like your school to get involved please contact me ASAP.
Scottish Champs Weekend - 27th and 28th May
This is a fun weekend with many EckO members choosing to camp together. You need to be a BOF member to enter this event.
On the Saturday the individual events take place. For this you run in your age class so M and W 10 (Men and Women aged 10 and under) will run a Yellow standard course, M and W 12 will run an orange etc.
On the Sunday it is the relays. We will be entering both competitive and non-competitive junior teams. There are 3 people to a team and the younger members of the teams will need to be competent on a yellow course.
Scottish Schools Competition - 3rd June
This will probably be on Friday 1st June (Date TBC). Again, this is for P4-7s and High School aged juniors. We will take a minibus again (and for those of you who went last year, we will put Callum in a car!). Please could you let me know if you think you may be interested (even if you are the only person in your school) so I can book minibuses and Drivers.
Scot Jos Training - 4th and 5th June
Scot Jos stands for Scotland Junior Orienteering Squad. They will be training in Argyll on the above dates and have kindly said that any EckO juniors competent at light green level are welcome to join them. Details to follow.
Jamie Stevenson Trophy - 19th June
This is an inter-club junior event held in and around Perth (hopefully Scone Palace). All juniors compete on their age related course so M/W 10 on a Yellow, M/W12 on a orange etc. and receive points for their position. The highest 6 scores from each club get added together to make a final score for each club. This is great fun and we hope to take as many juniors as want to come. Again let me know if you are interested as we may take a minibus.
British Schools - 20th November
This will be held in Scotland (most likely the Central belt) and runs in the same way as the Scottish Schools event. Please let me know if you think you may be interested.
When entering events you will see some of the following terms:
BOF no. - This is your British Orienteering Federation membership number. You can join free of charge for your first year by downloading the form off the website and posting it in. Membership runs from Jan to Dec. and you pay the same price regardless of when you join.
SI no. - This is the number from your “dibber”. If you don’t have your own dibber you ignore this box and tick the one that says “hire an SI card”.
EMIT no. - This is another sort of “dibber” but is flat and sometimes called a Brikee. Some of the northern clubs use these so again just tick the box that says “hire”.
Parental Split times – These are for parents who both want to run but have juniors running as well or other younger children who need looking after. If you ask for a Parental split time they will ensure that one parent has a very early time and one a late time to ensure child care coverage.
