New Year Deflab Fun Run 2010

New Year Deflab Fun Run 2010

The (now) annual New Year deflab fun run took place on Sunday 3rd January 2010. The format and location was meant to be the same as last year, but the icy weather put paid to part of that! John Anderson reported that the road up to the Nature Reserve at Taynish was impassible but he suggested an alternative.

Eighteen people (five junior and thirteen seniors) turned up at the Barnluasgan Car Park on the road in to Tayvallich. It was a lovely bright day, but the temperature was below freezing.  However many came equipped with their metal spike ‘dob’ orienteering shoes which were donned as soon as they got out of the car - otherwise it was a bit like looking at performance of ‘Bambi on ice’.

As usual there were a variety of exercise options from the car park. Emily took Andrea for a walk up to the viewpoint; they reported very icy steps on this route. Kate and Carol were taken around Loch Coille Bharr by Sam, Callum, Tom and Ellis with Callum communicating via mobile phone when the lads were out of sight of the ladies.  Tina and Keith, Gill and Andy B all went for a walk around the loch. The ‘fast group’ of Andy D, Alan, Arlene and Paul set off around the loch and then included the viewpoint route at the end of their run. Marieke and Lynne had both been stood up by the people they were expecting to run with so they formed another group to run around Loch Coille Bharr.

At the car park there were warning signs about a flood on the route. This flood is caused by the beavers that have been introduced into the area. They have felled some trees at the outlet from a small loch (Loch Dubh) and so this loch level has risen. However the flood was no problem as it was frozen solid and we could run over it easily!

After the exercise it was off down the road to Tayvallich and the coffee shop. Rosie and John had laid on a buffet with some lovely warming soup to start with. Thanks a lot John & Rosie! Lots of chat and exchange of festive stories before we all headed for home about 5pm. Oh, a word of warning for another year - if you like cake, do not sit with the juniors!

All the photos below (except for the one in the coffee shop) were taken on my very ‘bling’ phone, referred to as ‘Wee J’!
