Stars, Corridors and Marshes

The weekend of 26th/ 27th March 2011, was big on sport. We had the boat race, the Australian Grand Prix, Cricket World Cup and Scotland v. Brazil at football. And overshadowing these minor tournaments was Lynne’s training session at Aird’s Park East.
Those of us who were not distracted by TV based sporting activities made it out to a boggy area to the West of Taynuilt for some timely lessons in how to ‘get less lost than you used to’. The order of the day was to run short sections of courses, with less information than you’d normally have. In particular the aim was to read the ground rather than relying on other navigation aids.
Lynne had devised a range of exercises, designed to give everyone a challenge, no matter what their level. We were sent off in various directions (hence the ‘star’ exercise) with small pieces of map and no compass, but with the critical addition of some sound advice before we went. And for those who didn’t take enough notice of the comments at the start that both boulders and vegetation boundaries were poorly marked, the point was soon brought home!
Some maps had features removed, others were blanked out so that only the corridor of map was shown between the controls, all of which made us work hard on technical skills.
It was a great day out in the spring sunshine and certainly time better spent than it would have been watching the cricket!
