Traders

CompassPoint (Supplier of specialist orienteering equipment, shoes, clothing & safety items) are planning to be at the event.

String Course

We do not have a string course, but will be offering a free White course map to under 5’s. Parents will need to have run before they accompany children round the White though.

Safety

All competitors are strongly advised to carry a whistle. Six short blasts indicate a competitor in trouble.
Anyone hearing this signal is asked to offer assistance.
Torinturk is relatively exposed to weather approaching from the west. In the event of bad weather the organisers may insist competitors carry a cagoule and whistle for their own safety. We do NOT expect Cagoules to be required.
If you travelled alone, keys can be left in a box at registration.

First Aid

There will be no specific first aid provision. However there are several trained first aiders available during the event and they will have access to a basic first aid kit. This will be located at the enquiries and registration tent. Competitors should bring their own basic first aid kit for minor cuts.

Dogs

Dogs are not allowed in the parking or assembly areas
This is due to lambing, calving and the ongoing threat of disease (Neospora, which can cause cattle to abort) from dog faeces.
You can download this PDF from the NFUS that explains the issues.
Failure to comply with this could mean that access to these areas for the future is denied.

Event on Saturday

Clydeside Orienteers are hosting an event on Saturday 17th at the nearby Coille Nathais, more details on the CLYDE website

Thank you

Mrs EV McCorquodale of Glenlonan - Owner

This route will be marked with orienteering flags/signs from Taynuilt.

From North – Travel on the A82 from Fort William to Connel.  After crossing Connel Bridge take the first exit on your left “Barran/Kilmore”.  Travel on this single track road for approximately 4 miles, take left turn signposted Taynuilt and travel for a further mile.  Turn right into Torinturk Farm.  This route will be marked with orienteering flags/signs from the Connel and Barran/Kilmore junction.

As all access is on single track roads all vehicles should arrive at site by 12.30 p.m.  No vehicle should leave the event until after 12.30 p.m.  Make use of passing places on single track roads and do not travel in groups of more than three cars to allow maximum use of passing places.

Terrain:

Mostly an open runnable hillside with intricate boulder and crag detail. Bracken is well rotted and vegetation is mostly short grazed so very runnable. There is an area of open mixed mature birch/pine scattered woodland on the side of Glen Lonan that all TD4/5 courses venture into. Minimal fence crossing involved. White/Yellow mostly follow tracks or powerlines.
The map was produced by Stirling Surveys in August 2010 for “Oban 6 days 2011” with some minor updates by planners.

Courses:

All courses use the same start. Start is 300m and 50m climb along a farm track from assembly/parking area.

Start times:

Registration opens at 9:30am, starts 10:30 - 13:00

Entry Fees:

Juniors: £5
White to Light Green Senior: £5
Seniors: £11 (£13 for non-BOF members)
There will be a £2 supplement for senior TD5 entries after 11th March and entry on the day.
Apologies for the slightly higher entry fees but we are being charged for the extra costs of moving livestock around the farm to accommodate the event. Cows are in calf and sheep about to lamb and they require to be moved off the hill to avoid being disturbed where otherwise they would remain in the competition area.
Farming margins are tight in this part of the world including suitable land and labour. Consequently the estate require more than the usual parking and share of entry fee to accommodate us without being out of pocket. All of these costs have to be reflected In our entry fee.

Control Description Quiz

Do you understand these symbols?

Control symbols

We will be using these descriptions for all courses from now on, so you need to understand them.

Have a look at this website: IOF Quiz
It has a quiz on the control description symbols. It is very well laid out with an option to time your answers.
