Sutherland's Grove , 10th Nov 07

I hope you all enjoyed the different format to usual. It seemed well-suited to Sutherland's Grove which has a varied network of tracks. I certainly enjoyed exploring there, and admit to choosing more than one control site for its view! That might not have been obvious on the rather grey day, but the rain held off and we even got a bit of sun at the end.

Getting all the controls within the hour and a half narrowly eluded the fastest riders, with Tim Brand getting all but one with a little time to spare and Ben Cathro getting them all but with penalties for being several minutes overtime. It was great to see the D of E folks running around enthusiastically before the bike event, then biking around equally enthusiastically. And special congratulations to Lewis Bigham and Lucy Heycock who both completed the double-bill with the North Argyll Cycle Club cross-country race the following day enjoying a beautiful sunny day.

The map was experimental, using a bike orienteering symbol set. All the tracks were rated by their rideability while the vegetation detail of a standard orienteering map was toned down. All feedback welcomed!

The aim was to find your way to as many controls (checkpoints) as you can within a set time. You choose between a 60-minute and a 90-minute class. Riding was mostly on gravel tracks with options to use a few trickier singletracks. The event map is specially drawn for bike orienteering at a scale of 1:20,000 and printed on waterproof paper.

The total points shown are after 10 points being deducted for every 1 min late back.

RouteGadget will be available on Monday.

You can record the route you took to each control and view the routes other people took on the RouteGadget page.

There was a problem with the data for RouteGadget, so you will need to add your name, course and time taken manually.

When you open the page select the "Draw your route" option at the top right of the page. Slect the course from the drop down menu and then type your name in the box below it. Just to the left there is a box to enter your "Cumulative time in mmmss", so make a note from this page of your time.

Now draw your route using your mouse, a blue line will always be linked to the finish from wherever you are. Use the "Undo" button if you make a mistake. When you have finished click "Save".
