Photos & report below.
For RouteGadget I have merged the Juniors & Seniors to make it easier to compare routes. The order is time taken without any time penalties applied or points.

Congratulations to the winners:
Club Champs junior: Briony Kincaid
Club Champs senior: Kate Hunter
Spring Series winner: John Anderson

Kate Hunters view of the event.

I arrived at Ganavan car park on Saturday 20th September for the first ever Ecko Club Championships and wondered whether I was in the right place. Nobody else seemed to be there and it was already 4.00pm. A quick phone call to another club member confirmed I was in the right place and then other junior members started to arrive.

The younger Juniors were first up, Niall explained the rules, gave them 5 minutes to look at the map and then they were off. After half an hour (or earlier in the case of some) they all reappeared and after some quick calculations Emma Baird and Bridget Cox were announced as the winners. While the juniors were out and I was getting my half hour warm up shadowing them the car park seemed to have filled up with a huge number of people all ready for the main event.

Niall explained the rules and the time penalties for anyone arriving late back, a quick look at the map and then the older juniors and adults were off. By sheer good fortune I had chosen the same route (initially) as two of the taller, very experienced members of the club and I was able to get a little bit of extra help as I could see them periodically disappear and the reappear in patches of bracken away in the distance which was a big help in quickly locating the controls. 45 minutes later saw me and the majority of people pouring back into the car park for the finish although some people were a little bit later and only just managed not to get minus points due to Niall’s very harsh time penalties.

After that it was a quick dash to the Oban Sailing Clubhouse which had been organised by Mandy for the social. With everyone bringing a dish, a fantastic spread was laid on but before we could get at the food there were the presentations by Ronnie McCuish from the council. First there was a participation certificate for all the younger juniors and for the older juniors a cup which was won by Bryony by a very narrow points margin (9 I believe). John Anderson then received a trophy as winner of the spring series and after some lengthy calculations based on peoples runs over the Purple Thistle weekend in August (during which I spent long periods of time running around completely lost so had a great handicap) I nearly fell over when I was announced as the first ever club champion and received a lovely wall hanging done by Mary Greig, one of the more senior Ecko members. The Oban Times appeared to take some photos and then the eating could commence. A great time was had by all and I’m told one of my duties as Club Champ is to organise next year’s event - so watch this space!
