Local level event

Explanation of Event levels

Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Activities are non competitive events used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships.

Report

Weather reports for Sunday's event at Barcaldine were dire, and with the club event tent currently under repair, I had visions of competitors passing their dibbers through my barely open car window to download their results. Thanks to Ross erecting a tarpaulin using convenient trees adjacent to the car park, I was able to run download and mains printer in (almost) moisture-free conditions.

Barcaldine is a challenge for planners. There is an extensive track and path network and so true TD5 courses are not really possible. And the recent felling in the middle of the map has made off-track Orange/ Light Green difficult to plan. So I added a little to the north end of the map, dropped Light Green, and lengthened Orange. That seemed to go well.

I added a couple of bikers' downhill tracks at the south end of the map (they are lovely, by the way) to extend the Blue course.

The downside of Blue/Green was the dead running between the north and south areas of the map; so I stuck a couple of easy controls there to keep you awake at least.

My thanks to all those of you expressed how much they enjoyed themselves; that makes my time spent worthwhile. Thanks also to Ross for help on the day and for collecting most of the controls. ( And to Mandy P for finding the compass I lost whilst placing controls).

Alan.

Map / Terrain

The map is a mixture of forestry woodland, some dense, some open; occasional pockets of deciduous trees; and felled areas (best avoided). There is a extensive network of tracks and paths.

Course Information

There will be four courses:

There is no Light Green course, but given the nature of the forest, the Green course should be not be too great a challenge for those who are confident on Light Green.
