Kilmory, Sat 24th November 07, report

There was a very good turnout considering the weather (frequent heavy showers). This was the first time the club had used this new area, and found that it offered a good range of challenges for people of all abilities. It was good to see some new faces and we hope that you enjoyed it enough to come back for more.

Niall Urquhart (planner& organiser), offered some extra value for money. Before the normal colour coded courses started a 20 minute score event was offered to get people warmed up. With the score event you had a map with 16 control sites marked, and the aim was to try and visit as many as possible in 20 minutes. Each control was worth a number of points, the further away or harder ones were worth 50 whilst the close easy ones only 10 points. You could visit any number of controls , in any order- but beware, if you were late back there were penalty points! For every 30 seconds you were late back you lost 10 points.

This type of orienteering works very well in urban / park areas with a good path network. The route choices you make between controls can really make a difference to your score. It encourages you to think quicker and even run faster as you only have a short time. A mass start also provides a bit more of an atmosphere of competition. Score events have the advantage that individuals can decide what level of distance / technical challenge they want to try.

Following the success of today EckO will be offering more score style events in future, both in addition to the normal colour coded courses and as stand alone events.
