Explanation of Event levels

Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Activities are non competitive events used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships.

Report

Another successful EckO event. Despite a dire but accurate weather forecast, more than forty folk turned out for John McLuckie’s event at Glencruitten Woods.

John created the Glencruitten map last year, updated the map this year (there has been a lot of felling), and planned Sunday’s courses. Unfortunately, as he put out Sunday’s controls on Saturday evening (by moonlight!), he discovered some new, unexpected felling which meant, at least, course alterations or, worse, complete cancellation of the event. After a recce by Ross Lilley on Sunday morning it was decided that we could go ahead, but two controls required to be removed from the Blue and Green courses, with warnings about adjacent log piles and Ross policing the area.

Before the first competitors arrived, John and Ross endured some horrible showers putting out the last few controls, Start, and Finish. (Whilst your scribe set up registration and download in the comfort of Ross’s van).

John’s longer courses proved more challenging than some competitors expected, given the extensive path network. Reaching some off-path controls was physically demanding and later finishers experienced another horrendous squall. Thankfully, no-one required Ross’s mountain rescue skills.

A big thank-you to John for mapping, planning, and placing controls; and to John (again), Ross, and Andrea for collecting controls.

Keep an eye on the EckO website for information about our upcoming Spring Series.

Alan.

And my thanks to Alan for printing maps, registration and download.

John.
