Local level event

Explanation of Event levels

Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Activities are non competitive events used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships.

Report

Another really successful event from EckO, thanks to planner Dave Bleazard and controller Carol Burnapp. The weather was better than forecast and, in contrast to last month's accessible location, with mostly simple orienteering, Kerrera involved a ferry crossing and a 2km hike just to get to the start, before exposing competitors to interesting, mostly path free terrain. (If you thought getting to the start a bit of a toil, think of Dave and Carol visiting to recce, then check control sites, then set out controls, and finally cart equipment uphill.)

Turnout was again excellent and nobody mispunched or retired - a tribute to Dave and Carol's courses. A big thank you to all who helped collect controls and carried equipment back to the ferry.

If you ran Blue, Green or Light Green please consider entering your route by clicking the link to Routegadget. You can do this by hand or by uploading your GPS file. Doing so allows you to compare your route choices with those of others. It is also useful to planners to see competitors' routes.

Pre Event Info

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

The start is approximately 2km and 100m climb up the track west from the ferry (a 25 minute walk or 15 minute cycle). The track goes past Balliemore farm and takes the next left to the high point of the track.

The ferry starts running at 10:00am and runs every 30 minutes or on demand as people are waiting

The ferry only takes 12 passengers so you might have to wait your turn and ferry tickets NEED to be purchased in advance via the Calmac website or app.

The ferry goes off for lunch between 12:30 and 2:00 so bring some food, water, spare clothing etc. with you.

Please note that no dogs are allowed

Directions / Parking

Follow the coast road (Glenshellach Road) south west from Oban to the mainland Kerrera ferry slipway. Parking is at this point. Please park considerately as the public use this parking area as well.

Map / Terrain

The ground is quite rough on Kerrera. Courses take account of this. Due to the limitations of the mapped area, the yellow and orange courses will cover rougher ground than is normal. There are a few unmapped quad bike tracks which can help.
