Local level event

Explanation of Event levels

Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Activities are non competitive events used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships.

Report

After a week of mostly dismal weather we were blessed with superb conditions and a great turnout. With felling operations confining us to a small area in the north-west corner of the map, the longest course was only 3.2 km and involved looping round twice. Nonetheless, most people seemed to enjoy themselves.

Unfortunately, one of the electronic boxes, number 106 (control 8 on the Yellow course, control 10 on the Orange) was misbehaving; some people punched successfully, others did not. The results computer has therefore credited all competitors with having visited this control.

Alan.

A huge thank you to Alan for all your hard work behind the scenes planning the courses, organising the event, running the technology and getting the results up on the website so quickly. Thanks also to all those who helped to dismantle the tent, collect controls in and generally tidy up after the event.

It was great to see so many keen adults at the pre-coaching meeting. I will be in touch with further details. EckO look forward to seeing everybody at the next event on Saturday, 1st February, 2020. Further details will be on the website shortly.

Course Information

Current felling operations mean that we are confined to the north-west corner of the map which will feature a larger scale than usual - 1:5000.

There will be three courses:

Yellow. Short (2.0 km) and easy, follows tracks and paths.

Orange. A little longer (2.2 km) , involves leaving paths and requires some navigation experience.

Short Green. For experienced orienteers, but still short (3.2 km); features some rough terrain and requires navigation experience.

ADULT COACHING:

Jan Kersel is undertaking her Level 2 Orienteering coaching award. She is looking to coach a group of no more than 6 adults who have not done a lot of orienteering but would like to progress their skills, through an organised programme of 6 structured orienteering sessions.

These sessions are likely to precede each EckO event this winter/spring but dates will be discussed and confirmed with the group once the group is finalised. If you are interested in being part of this group, Jan will be holding an informal meeting at Sutherland's Grove at 10.30 prior to the event and will be happy to chat about the proposed plan.

If you are unable to attend but would like to be part of the group please email Jan at jan.kersel@ecko.org.uk
