EckO at the JK
This year the Jan Kellstrom International Orienteering Festival (JK) was held over the Easter weekend in South Wales.
Last Friday, five EckOteers (Iris W18E, Roanne W21E, Susannah W50L, Jan W60L and Bill (M70 yellow + photgrapher) made their way to the sprint event (Day 1) in Swansea University which is set in rolling parkland overlooking Swansea Bay.
Day 2 (Middle) saw a move to Clydach Terrace near Abergavenny. Clydach Terrace is the site of abandoned 19th-century ironstone workings characterised by a large number of finger-shaped tips. The detailed contoured hillside, combined with open moorland and few paths provided testing terrain for navigation at speed.
Day 3 (Long)at Pwll Du near Abergavenny consisted of open upland mining terrain lying between 400m and 500m. There were many spoil heaps and other distinct earthworks, but equally as many less distinct features.
Congratulations to all who took part.
Susannah 13th W50L, Roanne 33rd W21E and Jan 46th W60L
but...
Special congratulations to Iris who performed consistently well over the 3 days and eventually came 3rd overall on W18E. Iris has now gained a very solid set of results over the International qualification period. Watch this space!
